My Favorite Working Painter

In October of 2025, the Port Warwick Art and Sculpture Festival was happening a few steps away from where I lived. My sister and her family were coming into town that same weekend, so before I picked them up at the airport I walked around the art show. There were interesting vendors selling unique crafts and jewelry. But most of the paintings I saw there reminded me of the acceptable, perfectly color-matched living room decor prints you’d see any Home Goods store. A few artists had striking, ultra-modern or bold statement paintings that showed incredible talent, but were just not my taste.

Then I saw the work of Candice Rawlings. Her work resonated with me immediately. It is somehow contemplative and joyful. Her paintings evoke nostalgia for a life you never lived, but can instantly inhabit from seeing the face of her subjects. At that festival in 2025, I bought her painting called “Downbeat” and it lives on the wall of my home office where I see it every day.

Rawlings describes her paintings as merging “classical sensitivity with modern romanticism” and I think that’s a perfect description.

You can connect with her on Instagram @candicerawlingsart7 or browse her web site to see more of her work.

My Abandonware

Run or download retro video games for free! As a kid I used to play all these Intellivision (one of the first video game consoles ever made) games with my Dad. Just used this site to play Intellivision Boxing. It was just like I remembered it.

-Josh

From the site:

My Abandonware was created in February 2009 as a revival of oldware.net. Over the years, thousands of games have been added to the site. We want to create the best video game museum on the web and let everyone around the world enjoy the incredible amount of great software created in the 80s and 90s.

Until now, we have focused our work on the DOS era, with some very rare titles found in the deep web, and some sent by our awesome visitors. More recent games and other platforms are available now. Enjoy!

We are two administrating the site, but a small French company is behind MyAbandonware: Codestible. Few people are working from time to time on the site.

One Minute Park

One Minute Park allows you to visit parks from around the world for one minute each. These are just one minute videos, not webcams. Eventually the project will fill in all the minutes (1440) in a day. So far we have 254 minutes. You can create your own One Minute Park and contribute to the project.

One Minute Park is a project by Elliott Cost. Thank you to Are.na for hosting all the videos. It is unfunded and a labor of love. Any support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for visiting!

Any Human Ever

This is an incredible web site that I got lost in for hours one day. To understand it, you just have to try it.

-Josh

If you could draw a life at random from all of human history, what would it look like? Roll the dice, and see a genuinely random life, depicted as well as the data allow.

That's the idea of anyhumanever. Over 100 billion humans, each with a story. We are at the freaky tail-end of a brutal human history; our lives are statistically anomalous in every way imaginable . . . if we can internalize the statistical strangeness of our current selves, at least the present will gain some of the credit it surely deserves.
